Bible Verse

1 Peter 1:1–9
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the elect who are exiles of the Dispersion throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy, now that you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Reflection

Nearly everything we possess in this life is temporary. Wealth can disappear. Health can fail. Recognition fades. Possessions wear out. Even the praise of other people is often forgotten as quickly as it is given.

Peter points believers toward something entirely different: an inheritance that cannot perish, spoil, or fade. Our hope is not secured by our ability to preserve the things of this world. It is secured by God.

That truth should change the value we assign to things. There is nothing wrong with enjoying God's temporal blessings, but they make terrible foundations for our hope. If our joy depends upon keeping what cannot be kept forever, fear will always be close behind.

In Christ we have something death itself cannot take away. The world may remove titles, possessions, comfort, reputation, and eventually even our earthly lives, but it cannot reach what God has reserved for those who belong to Him.

Enjoy God's gifts with gratitude, but do not mistake the temporary for the eternal. Our greatest treasure is the one that cannot fade.

Practical Application

  • When a temporary problem feels overwhelming today, deliberately place it beside the eternal hope God has promised in Christ.
  • Hold one possession or earthly ambition more loosely by remembering that it cannot be carried into eternity.
  • Encourage a discouraged believer with a specific biblical promise about the future God has prepared.
  • Let eternal priorities influence one decision about how you spend your time or resources today.
  • Thank God that death and loss do not have the final word for those who belong to Christ.
