1 Peter 1

Supplementary Note: 1 Peter 1:1–2 — Election According to Foreknowledge

Peter calls believers elect according to God’s foreknowledge, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Christ. The verse directly relates election to foreknowledge but does not define foreknowledge as unconditional election. Preserve Peter’s distinctions among foreknowledge, election, sanctification, and obedience.

1 Peter 1:20 — Christ Foreknown

Christ was foreknown before the foundation of the world and manifested in the last times. This cautions against treating foreknowledge and predestination as interchangeable lexical terms. Christ was not selected from alternative possible Messiahs. Context must determine what “foreknow” contributes in each passage.
