Paul describes Christian character as fruit, which is an important picture. Fruit grows from life within; it is not attached artificially from the outside. The Holy Spirit works in believers to produce qualities that increasingly resemble Christ. This growth is real, but it is usually gradual. We may wish spiritual maturity appeared instantly, yet fruit develops over time through abiding, obedience, correction, and repeated dependence upon God. The list also exposes how easily we can emphasize some traits while excusing the absence of others. We may value truth but lack gentleness, pursue discipline but lack joy, or speak about faith while remaining impatient with people. The Spirit's work forms the whole person. Because this is His fruit, we cannot produce it merely through willpower. Yet neither are we passive. We are called to walk in the Spirit, reject the works of the flesh, and practice obedience in concrete situations. Patience grows as we choose patience with difficult people. Self-control strengthens as we deny impulses that contradict God's will. Love becomes visible through actual sacrifice. Spiritual fruit is therefore both God's work and something we are called to walk out. The goal is not appearing impressive. It is becoming increasingly like Christ in the ordinary places where character is tested.
