John 12:32 — I Will Draw All People

This is important for John 6:44. Jesus says that when lifted up He will draw all people to Himself. Whatever precise scope is assigned to “all,” this prevents simply defining drawing as an irresistible act experienced only by those finally converted. If drawing necessarily produced conversion, John 12:32 would naturally tend toward universal salvation. Distinguish God’s gracious drawing from the response to that drawing

Supplementary Note:  John 12:39–40 — Unbelief and Judicial Hardening

John cites Isaiah to explain unbelief after people had witnessed Jesus’ signs. The hardening must be read against the preceding history of light, testimony, signs, teaching, invitation, and repeated refusal. Isaiah likewise concerns a people becoming dull through persistent
rebellion. Judicial hardening is not identical to an eternal decree first causing unbelief. God may confirm persistent rebels in their chosen course without becoming the moral author of their rebellion.
