John 6:22–40 — Bread of Life, Faith, and Those Given by the Father

The discourse follows the feeding of the five thousand and confronts superficial expectations and unbelief. Jesus repeatedly connects coming to Him and believing in Him. “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me” genuinely affirms divine initiative and certainty. The disputed question is whether “given” itself means unconditional pre-creation selection of particular unbelievers to be made believers. The word should not be assigned that theological definition before the context establishes it.

John 6:37 — All the Father Gives Me

The certainty should not be weakened: all whom the Father gives will come, and whoever comes will not be cast out. But the verse does not explicitly state when the Father gives them, the mechanism of the giving, or that giving means an eternal decree selecting particular unbelievers for irresistible regeneration. Those conclusions require demonstration. The second half is equally important: whoever comes will never be cast out.

Supplementary Note: John 6:44–45 — Drawing, Teaching, Hearing, and Learning

“No one can come” establishes divine initiative. Jesus immediately explains the Father’s drawing by citing the prophets: all will be taught by God; everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Christ. Drawing is therefore connected with divine teaching, hearing, and learning. The text does not call drawing regeneration or state that drawing is irresistible. John 12:32 must also be considered when defining John’s drawing language.

John 6:65 — Granted by the Father

Coming to Christ is possible only because God provides what is necessary. Divine provision, however, is not identical to the assertion
that God selectively withholds all possibility of faith from everyone except an unconditionally chosen group. The surrounding discourse includes teaching, hearing, learning, believing, and coming. The verse establishes dependence upon God’s initiative; it does not itself define that initiative as irresistible regeneration preceding faith.
